BGCCF Named Four-Star Charity By Charity Navigator

Charity Navigator

We’re proud to have earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator—only 3% of nonprofits nationwide can claim this accomplishment. We’ve worked hard to be fiscally accountable and demonstrate to our supporters that we are an open book committed to running a sound organization. Charity Navigator is America’s premier independent charity evaluator. They help charitable givers make intelligent giving decisions by providing in-depth, objective ratings and analysis of the financial health and accountability & transparency of America’s largest charities. Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way. Orlando Magic Holiday Shopping Spree:

Glen Davis and Andrew Nicholson from the Orlando Magic teamed up with Pepsi and Walmart to give a little cheer to some of our children this season. Club members from our Buenaventura Lakes, Parramore and W. Orange Branches were treated to a holiday shopping spree, each receiving $100 gift cards. Members purchased gifts for themselves and for family members—all in the spirit of giving and receiving. The generous event culminated with a check presentation to BGCCF president & CEO, Gary Cain. We are grateful to everyone who took part in this event and provided some happy memories for our members this holiday season… most may not otherwise have anything under their tree this year.

Supporter Spotlight: Wells Fargo and our Mims Branch

Recently, our Mims Branch in Brevard County hosted an important session on banking and financing with Wells Fargo Bank. Club members learned about how to manage a checking account, create a budget, save and invest, and pay for college. All of our Clubs promote financial responsibility and independence and with the help of our friends from Wells Fargo, we are continuing to educate members on how to look out for their personal financial future.

Community Spotlight: Taft Branch Remembers

On September 11, Keystone and Torch Club  members from the Taft Branch created a thank you banner to recognize local firefighters at Fire Engine Station 73. In addition to the specially created banner, each firefighter received their own personalized wreath to remember the day.  We appreciate their continued service and dedication to the people of our local Taft community. Thank you for all you do!

Volunteer Spotlight: Alison Fox

Alison Fox_Volunteer of the Year 2013

Alison with Walt Disney World Clubhouse service director, Jose Bastias at the 2013 Annual Meeting in February, where she was named one of the three Volunteers of the Year.

Meet Alison Fox, a volunteer whose heart is as big as her impact on the Club members she meets with every week. She is a graphic designer, a mentor, and a friend to many. Whether it’s spending an entire day getting her hands dirty by helping to build our Club’s KABOOM! playground, working with Club members on crafts and homework, Alison plays a vital role in the development and lives of our Club members as a caring adult role model.

Q: How long have you been a volunteer with BGCCF?

A: I have been a volunteer at the Walt Disney World Clubhouse for the past nine years, and I visit every Friday.

Q: How did you first get involved with BGCCF?

A: I heard about volunteering at BGCCF through my work, Turnstile Publishing Co., and I thought it sounded like a great opportunity where I would get to help kids in our community.

Q: What do you do at the Club when you volunteer?

A: I get to play and socialize with the younger Club members. I love being with the younger ones because you get to observe all of them together and you get to see who may need a little extra push to participate in activities.

Q: What is your favorite part about volunteering at the Club?

A: Meeting new friends and seeing them grow up!

New Park Opens at the Temple Terrace Branch

TT Park Opening

This June, our Temple Terrace Branch in Brevard County celebrated the opening of a new park at their Club that features new park benches and tables, a swing set, slide, merry-go-round, monkey bars and more. The ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 22nd included face painting, games, prizes, food and lots of fun.

The new park was made possible with the help of the Housing Authority of Brevard County and began as a community service project that Temple Terrace teen Club members organized for Keystone Club. The teens created a proposal for a new playground to be constructed in their neighborhood and then presented it to the members of the Housing Authority, including Mr. Mike Bean, CEO, earlier this year.

We are proud of our teens for the creativity and hard work they put into their design to create a space where families can play and meet, and we are extremely grateful to the Housing Authority of Brevard County for making this dream park a reality!

Disney Fantasy Group

Families & Club members joined by Disney VoluntEARS on Castaway Cay Island in 2012.

In March 2012, Disney Cruise Line surprised BGCCF again with another magical opportunity…this time to sail aboard the newest ship in their fleet, the Disney Fantasy!

What better way to celebrate the arrival of the Disney Fantasy than to mark the occasion with a $250,000 contribution to help support our Brevard County Capital Campaign and upcoming Club in the Cocoa community. The generous gift was announced during a special “Plaque & Key” Exchange Ceremony which celebrated the arrival of Disney’s newest ship and commemorated the inaugural call of the Disney Fantasy on Port Canaveral.

Approximately 20 BGCCF families and Youth of the Year winners from various Clubs eagerly boarded the Disney Fantasy for an unforgettable three-day cruise that included an exciting sail-away party, meaningful community service project that yielded 100 art supply kits that would be later contributed to local Bahamian schools, as well as BGCCF. Thank you to Disney for offering our families this unforgettable opportunity…welcome home, Disney Fantasy!
