A Birthday to Remember
When friends and family members logged onto Facebook to wish Thomas Wang a happy 27th birthday, he presented them with a challenge: Want to make my birthday truly special? How about making a donation to Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida?
With a few clicks of the mouse, Thomas created a “Go Fund Me” account, and within a couple hours of the Facebook challenge, he had reached his $250 goal. “That was too easy,” he thought, and raised the goal to $1,000.
Earlier this week, Thomas surprised BGCCF staff by dropping by the office unannounced and presenting us with a check for $1,100, donated by 42 of his Facebook friends within one week of his post.
Now the manager of SusHi Eatstation in Altamonte Springs, a successful counter-service sushi restaurant chain, Thomas was a Club member in Connecticut during his high school years. He credits the Boys & Girls Clubs with encouraging his love of dance and inspiring him to “do what you enjoy without fear.”
He inscribed the back of the giant check he created with a heartfelt letter: “You have given me more than I could have asked for throughout my teenage years,” Thomas wrote. “From the bottom of my heart, I believe that Boys & Girls Clubs of America makes a difference across the country each and every day.”
Thomas, you’ve made a difference, too. May your example inspire others to mark their birthdays by raising funds for their favorite charities.
