OUTSTANDING AFTERSCHOOL PROFESSIONALS GIVE THEIR HEARTS
Bet you didn’t know this is Afterschool Professionals Week–and while it’s not your typical Hallmark holiday, it should be. These folks are some of the hardest-working people out there, and make an incredible difference in the lives of the young people they serve. No one becomes a Youth Development Professional for the money or prestige–they do it for the love of children. We are so grateful to claim these YDP’s as our own at Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, and have named one special YDP of the Year for each of our divisions. We hope you’ll enjoy reading what their supervisors had to say about them:
“Carmen facilitates two academically focused programs that are sometimes hard to get members to participate in, but she makes them fun and exciting, and the kids love it. She led the Ocoee Shark Tank Team to victory, and will be accompanying one of her NBA Math Hoops participants to the National Championship in Detroit! She gets to know each member as an individual and is able to positively relate and influence the members to reach success. Even during snack time she is the life of the party, asking members how their day was, and what is going on in their life. She truly cares about each and every member, and that is evident in how they relate and interact with her.”
“At the Club we like to do on-the-spot fun, and different team building exercises to help members get to know each other. Tasha always organizes the groups and teams so that they’re paired with people other than their best friends. She always says, “how do you get to know someone if you stick with the same people?” Of course members do not like at first, but when this is structured with a fun activity they learn the value of getting to know new people, and it build camaraderie and friendships. Tasha loves making sure that all members get to know each other and that is a great asset to the team.”
“Saying that she is my right hand at the Club is an understatement. Ms. Jeanette has been diligent and proactive about learning about Boys & Girls Club culture in order to improve as a staff member and provide the best quality program for the kids. Ms. Jeanette is our main planner on fun! She is constantly utilizing her prep time to look on Pinterest and other sites to come up with new and creative programs and games for the kids to participate in. As a former athlete she is really into teamwork activities, and this trickles down to our Club Members.”
“Ms. Christina holds chat sessions in her program groups where kids are able to talk out their problems, feelings and emotions. She does this in a structured way that allows her to know how our members are getting along and what is happening in their lives. By hosting these chat sessions she insures that our old and new members get to know one another as well as work together and have a fun time doing so. These sessions are filled with laughter, joy and camaraderie and it’s always great when you see them circle up. Ms. Christina really is a true role model for our members that come on a daily basis. She is a big reason why many members return year after year. Now, I’d like to think that it was my programs that had the kids returning but at the end of the day I know it’s my phenomenal staff and Ms. Christina being a part of it that keeps these kids coming back!”
“Not only does she make sure that all members know that their opinion counts, Lindsey makes sure that all members know the difference between a follower and a leader. She has started a work for BGC bucks campaign, which allows members to take responsibility in the club and do small jobs around the club. She sincerely cares for what’s happening back home and is always asking them how their day at school went. She’s always looking to come with me and be part in different events around the community where the members are part of.”
HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO EACH OF THESE FIVE AMAZING WOMEN!
